Before the Hike: Preparation & Requirements
Advance Booking Required: You cannot walk in on the day; tours must be reserved in advance through the Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency (STEA) so local guides can be scheduled.
Moderate Physical Fitness: The terrain involves navigating uneven limestone rock, sharp karst ridges, muddy slopes, and thick bush. A reasonable baseline fitness level is required.
Safety Equipment (Caving): If participating in cave exploration, helmets and lights are provided by STEA guides, but standard safety rules must be followed.
During the Hike: Guidelines & Protocols
Guided Excursions Only: Venturing into Cockpit Country without a licensed, local guide is strongly discouraged due to dense vegetation, maze-like sinkholes, and poor cell coverage.
Environment Protection: Guests must adhere to "Leave No Trace" practices. Do not disturb bat roosts in cave passages, damage delicate limestone formations, or litter.
Pacing & Navigation: The group moves at the speed of the terrain. Stick close to your guide and follow their exact steps, as karst limestone can be razor-sharp and hide deep crevices.
Pants & Long Sleeves: Wearing long pants and breathable sleeves during the hike protects skin against mosquitoes and abrasive vegetation.

Clothing: Quick-dry clothing, long pants (for cave brush/limestone), and extra change of dry clothes.
Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe hiking shoes or water shoes with good traction.
Essentials: Towel, insect repellent, waterproof bag, reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and cash for local tips or crafts.

Bird Watching Tours: Departure at dawn (~5:30 AM ā 6:00 AM).Full-Day Combo Tour: 8:00 AM ā 4:00 PM.

How to Get There
Location: Southern Trelawny Environmental Agency (STEA) Headquarters, Albert Town, Trelawny Parish, Jamaica.
From Montego Bay / Falmouth: Head south along the B10 or B11 inland routes through Trelawny into the hills toward Albert Town.
From Kingston / South Coast: Travel via the A1/A3 highways toward Christiana or Mandeville, then head north into southern Trelawny.
Transport Tip: Roads through the Cockpit Country hills can be winding and rough; private charter, 4WD vehicles, or organized tour transfers are recommended.
